Yoga and Writing Workshop
Awaken Your Creativity through Kundalini Yoga


Calling all writers!  Join us for this one-day workshop of yoga and writing practice to awaken your creativity, fire your imagination, and prepare the body and mind for writing.

Who is it for?
Anyone who is interested in finding out how yoga can help to get the creative writing juices flowing.  The workshop is suitable for the beginner or more experienced writer and you don’t need to have done yoga before to attend.  The only requirement is an ability to breathe!

The workshop will comprise a mixture of Kundalini Yoga (postures, meditation, mantra, breathwork) and writing sessions.

When?
17 November 2018, 10am – 5pm.

Where?
We are incredibly lucky to be able to run the workshop at Blissland, on the outskirts of Congleton, Cheshire.  We will be in the Dreamcatcher Barn, a cosy and welcoming space with outstanding views over the Cheshire Plain.

The tutors
MANDY RYMILL is a Kundalini Yoga teacher and writer.  She trained in 2017 with the Sahej Academy and has since taught at Blissland and in the corporate world. She has been writing for twenty years and has been shortlisted in the Orange Pathe Screenwriting Competition and the Woman and Home Short Story Competition.  Her radio play, ‘Happy 40th Birthday’ was a winner in the Radio 5 Live World Cup Monologue Competition.   

ROZ WATKINS is the author of the DI Meg Dalton series, which is set in the Peak District where she lives. Her debut novel, The Devil’s Dice, was published in March 2018. It was shortlisted for the Debut Dagger award, and was The Times crime book of the month. Roz was previously a patent attorney, but this has absolutely nothing to do with a dead one appearing in her book! In her spare time, she acts as servant to a very demanding cat, and likes to walk the dog in the woods, scouting out good murder locations.

11:30 – 12:45     How do we find stories to write?  Firing the imagination.
12:45 – 13:15     Lunch (a light vegetarian lunch will be provided)
13:15 – 13:30     Meditation
13:30 – 14:45     Writing from a place of passion.  What’s important to you?
14:45 – 16:00     Kundalini Yoga for creativity
16:00 – 16:45     Sharing our writing (for those who want to)
16:45 - 17:00      Meditation to close

Yoga and writing… the perfect combination

  • Kundalini Yoga is the ‘Yoga of Awareness’, being aware of and learning about ourselves, others, the Universe… and isn’t that what we do when we write?
  • Through Kundalini Yoga we become more intuitive and creative, helping ideas to flow, not just from our mind but also from our soul.
  • Yoga creates a flexible mind and a flexible body… and that’s what we need for writing.
  • One of the aims of yoga is to prepare the body to sit for long periods in meditation.  Writers know all about sitting for long stretches (hammering away at the keyboard or thinking up ideas while staring into space!)  Kundalini Yoga helps to get our bodies ready to sit and write.
  • At the end of each Kundalini Yoga session we meditate.  This helps us to control our thoughts so that we can focus the mind on the present, exactly what we need as writers.
  • Many people of heard of the concept of flow, where we’re so absorbed in what we’re doing that we lose track of ourselves and of time, leading to a state of contentment.  For me, both yoga and writing get me in the flow.
  • One of the things we say in Kundalini Yoga is ‘keep up!’  Yoga requires commitment, discipline and resilience.  If we can build these in our yoga practice, then we can transfer them to our writing practice.
  • Yoga is a constant journey, as writing is.  And what a great journey it is!
